Birman Temperament
Birmans are one of, if not the most, laid back of all the domestic cat breeds. They are extremely gentle and renowned for their relaxed and content nature. They make loyal and devoted pets, who are not as demanding as some cat breeds, and will tolerate most situations. Birmans get along very well with people of any age, as well as other household pets.
They are an intelligent and affectionate breed, and very much a ‘lap cat’, often following their owner around to ensure they get their fair share of affection. Their relaxed and trusting nature, however, limits them to being strictly indoor only, as they have no road sense, and so should only be allowed outside if they are on a leash or in an enclosure.
Birman Health Issues
Hairballs: Due to being a long haired breed, Birmans often experience issues with hairballs forming in their intestinal tract and causing blockages. Frequently brushing your cat will help reduce this issue.
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: A disease in which the outer muscle of the heart thickens, leading to in the heart being unable to contract properly. This results in blood not moving into the heart chambers properly.
