Small animal harnesses and leads

We all love to have our pets as involved in family life as possible, this means having them out of their rabbit hutch or ferret cage as much as possible. But how can we have our pets out exploring the environment safely? The answer is with the use of a small animal harness attached to a small animal lead. At Kellyville pets we have lead and harness sets available on line and in store for rabbits, leads and harness small enough for guinea pigs and even for those cheeky Houdini, we have harnesses for Ferrets.

Ferret Harness-
Ferrets are highly intelligent creatures and they love to play and explore. Sometimes to their own detriment they can be overly adventurous and find themselves stuck under shelves or slipping down a drain. With the use of a ferret harness these kinds of accidents can be prevented.
A ferret harness is an easy way to keep your ferret restrained and safe, however you cannot simply slip a ferret harness on and hope your ferret is happy with it. Wearing a ferret harness can be very frightening and restrictive to your ferret, the correct training must be given before using your ferret harness and leash.
Start the training inside for safety. The younger a ferret is when you start to train a ferret to use a harness, the easier it will be. You can start harness training when your ferret is as young as ten weeks old. Put a harness on your ferret for a few minutes at a time, and keep it distracted with treat or exciting activities like a new ball with a rattle. As your ferret gets more used to the harness, slowly increase the amount of time the ferret wears it, and remember to always give it a reward.
It will take a few weeks for her to feel truly comfortable. Older ferrets may take longer if they have never worn a harness before.
After your ferret is leash trained indoors, you can start to train outdoors. Start by sticking close to home, once your ferret seems comfortable, you can extend your walks.
