Shih Tzu Breed Information:

The Shih Tzu is an alert, lively, little dog. It is happy and hardy, and packed with character. The gentle, loyal Shih Tzu makes friends easily and responds well to consistent, patient training. It makes a very alert watchdog. It is courageous and clever. Playful and spunky, this affectionate little dog likes to be with people and is generally good with other pets.

Shih Tzu Temperament:

The Shih Tzu is an affectionate, boisterous and playful breed. They generally do well in any type of home and are quite happy around children as well as other dogs and pets, given they have been properly socialised as a puppy. They are an affectionate and clever breed, however training them requires patience and consistency on the owners behalf. The Shih Tzu can be a fairly vocal breed so it is important to teach them from an early age that barking is not okay. If it is an issue that develops it is essential that it is dealt with before it becomes a habit. It is also important to remember not to 'baby' small breeds like Shih Tzu's, as they can become bossy and demanding - believing they are the top of the hierarchy in your home.

Shih Tzu Grooming:

Due to their thick coat, it is best to brush Shih Tzu's every second day to avoid tangling or matting. During the summer especially, a clip is recommended every 6-8 weeks. It is important to keep their nails trimmed to avoid impairing their walking ability, and to regularly check their eyes and ears, and clean when necessary, to keep them healthy.

Shih Tzu Exercise Requirements:

Due to their size, Shih Tzu's do not generally have high exercise requirements. A walk every few days as well as play time at home is generally sufficient.
