Gutloading Wombaroo

Apart from making products for wildlife carers, aviculturists and animal breeders, Passwell also supply specially formulated milk products for animal studies to Universities, Hospitals & Research Institutes.

They have supplied specialised bird foods and advice to endangered species recovery programs including the Black Stilt in New Zealand, the Magpie Robin in The Seychelles, the Regent Honeyeater in New South Wales, and the Helmeted Honeyeater in Victoria.

Passwell Lorikeet & Honeyeater Food, Insectivore Rearing Mix, Finch Soft Food and Parrot Pellets & Crumbles are used extensively as maintenance diets at institutions such as Taronga Zoo, Adelaide Zoo, Currumbin Bird Park, Gorge Wildlife Park, Territory Wildlife Park, Healesville Sanctuary, Department of Conservation and local councils.

Passwell are continuing their research into the nutritional requirements of captive and wild birds and animals and have developed several products specifically for zoos and captive breeding programs.

Birds eat a large variety of foods, but can broadly be classified into the following 3 categories:

Granivore - seed and grain eaters. This includes most parrots, finches, canaries, quail & pigeons.
Nectarivore - nectar and pollen eaters. This includes Lorikeets & honeyeaters.
Insectivore/Carnivore - insect, meat or fish eaters. This includes a large variety of wild birds and "softbills" including Magpies, Ravens, Kookaburras, Wrens, Robins, Swallows, Birds of Prey, Waders & Seabirds.

Insectivores and Carnivores eat a range of animal foods including insects, meat & fish. These birds obtain most of their energy from dietary protein, so should not be fed large amounts of carbohydrate (sugar or starches). Species in this category include magpies, ravens, kookaburras, kingfishers, birds of prey, waders & seabirds. Small insectivorous softbills kept as aviary birds include robins, whistlers, chats, wrens & woodswallows.

Wombaroo make Insectivore Rearing Mix, which is a balanced high protein diet for rearing or supplementing insectivorous or carnivorous birds. Also available is Finch Soft Food which can be used to boost the protein content in the diet of breeding birds and softbills.
