Rat Information:

Size/Weight: 200-500g

Life Span: 2-4 years

Rat Temperament:

Rats require a fair amount of attention and exercise time outside of their cages (at least an hour a day is ideal). Rats are very social and suggested to not be kept alone. Same sex pairs or groups are ideal. Males usually get along fine with other males especially if introduced at a young age or they are litter mates. Keeping rats in groups does not make them more difficult to tame if they are handled from a young age.
Rats are very curious, and will explore and enjoy any toys he/she is supplied with.

Rat Grooming:

Bathing a rat is generally not necessary. Rats will take care of this all on their own and seldom if ever will need help from you. It is however important to thoroughly clean their cage regularly. This will protect their health, your health and minimize odour from droppings.

Trimming nails, is something that will need to be done periodically. Rats have very small nails that can become sharp if left unattended. This can result in scratches to the skin of both you and your rats as well as pulls or frays in your clothing as your rats run and play on your arms and shoulders.Lucky for us rat lovers, rats are good groomers that need little help from us to keep them squeaky clean. With few exceptions, rats will keep their bodies clean with no soap and water required. All we have to do is provide the occasional salon treatment to tend to nails and our rats will be good to go!

Rat Housing:

A large wire cage is best, especially one with horizontal bars that allow the rat to climb on the sides if they wish. A tall cage with ramps and platforms is ideal for providing room for multiple rats. Avoid cages with wire flooring as spending time on wire flooring has been linked to bumble foot.
