Reptile Essentials for Spring! 🌞

Spring is here and your reptiles are waking up from brumation!

What is brumation?

Brumation is a natural period of dormancy that occurs in reptiles during cooler months. It's similar to hibernation in mammals, but instead of deep sleep, reptiles slow down their metabolism, become less active, and may stop eating for weeks or even months. They often remain hidden or burrowed, conserving energy until temperatures rise again.

When should my reptile emerge from brumation?

Once spring arrives and the weather warms up, reptiles "wake up" from brumation, becoming more active and resuming normal behaviors like eating and basking. It's a crucial seasonal cycle that helps regulate their health and reproduction. Now is the perfect time to prepare them and their enclosure for the warmer months ahead.

What can I do to help my reptile thrive?

Check out our tips below ⬇️

1. Clean their enclosure

As your reptile becomes active again, a clean environment is essential for its health. Remove old substrate, waste, and uneaten food, then disinfect the enclosure and accessories to eliminate bacteria, mold, and parasites that may have built up during dormancy. A fresh, hygienic space helps prevent illness and encourages natural behaviours like basking and exploring.

2. Check heating & lighting equipment

Reptiles rely on external heat and UVB light to regulate their body temperature, metabolism, and calcium absorption. After brumation, inspect all heating elements and UVB bulbs to ensure they’re functioning correctly and providing the right temperature gradient. Replace any expired bulbs and recalibrate thermostats or timers to match your reptile’s species-specific needs.

3. Gradually increase feeding

Your reptile’s appetite may return slowly, so start with small, easily digestible meals and monitor its response. Offer high-quality, species-appropriate food - whether it’s live insects, leafy greens, or formulated diets - to support energy recovery and nutritional balance. Avoid overfeeding too quickly, as their digestive system needs time to adjust.

4. Hydration

Rehydration is crucial after brumation. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available, and consider misting or soaking your reptile if it’s a species that absorbs moisture through the skin. Proper hydration supports digestion, shedding, and overall vitality, especially as they become more active.

5. Observe behaviour

Last, but not least, keep a close eye on your reptile’s behaviour in the days and weeks following brumation. Look for signs of normal activity like basking, exploring, and feeding. If your reptile remains lethargic, refuses food, or shows signs of distress, it may need a health check from a reptile-savvy vet. Early intervention can prevent complications and ensure a smooth transition into the active season.
