Do I need experience with animals?

Not always. Some animal care roles need experience, but plenty of positions are learn-on-the-job. What we can't teach is attitude - reliability, care and a genuine interest in animals matter most.

What's the difference between a job and work experience?

Paid employment is an ongoing role with rostered hours and a wage. Work experience is a short, unpaid placement - usually arranged through a school or course - designed to give you a look inside the industry. Both are applied for separately using the forms on this page.

Students & placements

Work experience at Kellyville Pets.

Studying towards a career with animals? Our Work Experience Program gives students real, hands-on time in a working pet store - learning from people who've been doing this for decades, not reading about it in a textbook.

Placements sit across two areas: animal care and husbandry, where you'll work alongside our care team on daily feeding, enrichment, health checks and welfare across every species in store; and retail and customer service, where you'll pick up product knowledge, merchandising, stock handling and how to give pet owners honest, useful advice.

You'll leave with genuine industry experience, a clearer view of the career paths available in the pet world, and the confidence that only comes from doing the job in a busy environment.

Work placement

To be eligible, you'll need to:

1 Be applying for, currently enrolled in, or accepted into a relevant TAFE or university course where a work placement is a mandatory course or admission requirement
2 Be available for a minimum placement of 3 months
3 Submit your expression of interest at least one month before your intended start date
4 Attend an interview — shortlisted applicants are interviewed before a placement is offered
