Aquarium Test Kits & Maintenance

Test kits are an important accessory when owning a fish tank of any kind.

Fish testing kits will tell you how much ammonia is in your fish tank as well as the PH levels in your fish tank. There are test kits to give an indication of other levels that need to be tested such as nitrite, nitrate, water hardness, calcium levels, and phosphate just to name a few. Here at Kellyville pets we have all the aquarium test kits you need to keep your aquarium healthy, alive and active.

Do you need to test for ammonia?

Ammonia is one of the biggest killers living in fish tanks, when first setting up any fish tank the ammonia levels need to drop before putting in any fish. It is best to set up your tank with a filter, rocks, plants etc.  Leave it running for at least 2 weeks for goldfish and fresh water fish and at least 6-8 weeks for tropical and salt water fish. This also allows good bacteria to develop in your filter. Using an ammonia test kit to determine when it is safe to have fish living in your tank.

Ammonia tests can be done as a liquid in test tubes or easy test strips.

Do I need to test pH levels in my fish tank?

pH control is imperative to prevent the harmful effects of overly alkaline or acidic aquarium water on fish and plant life.  Fish require a specific pH level to thrive.  Taking a few minutes each week to maintain and monitor aquarium conditions is the key to a healthy aquarium. However, pH in an aquarium can fluctuate due to fish waste, addition of tap water and the build-up of natural acids.   Using a pH kit to easily and accurately measure the pH level and maintain a healthy freshwater community aquarium.

Do I need to test my fish tank for Nitrite?

Toxic nitrite is produced by nitrifying bacteria in the biological filter as it breaks down ammonia. Nitrite is produced in the aquarium by fish waste and uneaten fish food.  Low levels of nitrite inhibit respiration and suppress the immune system; high levels cause suffocation. For use in freshwater and saltwater aquariums the NITRITE TEST KIT tests for harmful nitrite levels from 0 to 5 ppm.

Do I need to test my fish tank for Nitrate?

Nitrate is toxic to fish at high levels.  A Nitrate test can determine when a water change could help.

Nitrate is toxic to some invertebrates even at low levels. A nitrate test can determine when a water change should be carried out.  Nitrate is also a major cause of algae in freshwater.

High readings of Nitrate over time can cause issues of stress to a fish which can lead to disease and their ability to reproduce.

Do I need to test the water in my fish tank for carbonate hardness?

The Carbonate Hardness of water is an important measurement, because the level of Carbonate Hardness is the basis for the value of the pH in a given sample of water. A strong Carbonate Hardness reserve in water can mean a very stable pH and the bonus of an alternative supply of carbon dioxide for plants and algae if supply runs short. This applies equally for marine or freshwater environments. The level of Carbonate Hardness is the basis for the value of the pH in a given sample of water.

A Carbonate Hardness test is a test of the carbonate and bicarbonate extent contained in a sample of water. It affects all aquarium both salt and fresh.

Do I need to test calcium levels in my fish tank?

Too much calcium in water results in reduction of carbonate hardness levels and fluctuating pH.
