Isopod clean up crew are great recyclers of bioactive setups and are a beneficial addition to terrariums that come in a variety of colours, shapes, and sizes.
Any decaying organic material is fair game for these hardcore munching machines. They'll make sure that any rotting plant matter or animal waste is taken care of efficiently, leaving your bioactive enclosure looking and smelling clean!
We recommend adding these live, invertebrate decomposers (clean-up crew/custodians) at least 7-14 days prior to introducing your reptile or amphibian to the enclosure.
Approximately 10-15 mixed species isopods per standard tub; 35-40 isopods per bulk tub.
Understanding Isopod Clean Up Crew
What Are Isopods?
Isopods are fascinating crustaceans commonly found in various environments. They're best known for their role in the ecosystem as decomposers, breaking down organic matter. This makes them essential for any terrarium or aquarium, as they help maintain cleanliness and promote a healthy environment. Isopods are particularly effective at consuming leftover food and dead plant material, preventing the build-up of waste. Therefore, including isopods in your setup can significantly improve the overall health of your ecosystem.
Benefits of Using Isopods in Your Habitat
One of the primary advantages of incorporating isopods into your terrarium is their ability to control waste. They not only eat organic debris but also aerate the soil, improving water retention and root health. Furthermore, isopods reproduce quickly, ensuring that their population thrives as they help keep the habitat clean. As a result, using isopods reduces the need for frequent cleaning, allowing for a more stable living environment for your plants and pets.
How to Care for Your Isopod Clean Up Crew
Caring for isopods is quite simple, so beginners can easily manage them. They thrive in moist environments with plenty of hiding spots, such as leaf litter and damp substrate. Therefore, ensure that their habitat is kept humid but not waterlogged, as isopods require moisture to survive. Additionally, providing a balanced diet of decaying organic matter will keep them healthy and active. By understanding these basic care tips, you can ensure your isopod clean up crew flourishes and contributes positively to your terrarium's ecosystem.
