Sulphur Crested Cockatoo Temperament:
Sulphur Crested Cockatoos have a reputation for being loud and noisy birds, but they are also know to be very sweet and affectionate companions if hand fed as babies. In general, these birds love attention and being handled. You should make sure that you have the time and ability to provide plenty of attention for your bird before bringing a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo home. For those that can provide for a Cockatoo's needs, the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo makes an exceptional pet that is capable of learning speech, tricks, and a variety of behaviors.
Sulphur Crested Cockatoo Grooming:
Regular wing clipping is recommended to prevent flying away or any injuries to the bird.
Giving your Sulphur Crested Cockatoo the opportunity to bathe is important. Frequent bathing serves several purposes. It prevents dry skin, softens the keratin coating which helps with moulting, and keep your bird bright and clean.
Your bird should have access to a bathing dish with fresh water every day.
Sulphur Crested Cockatoo Feeding:
As a base, a pelleted diet is the best way to go for your African Grey. Preferably, an organically processed pellet, and not one that has additives, such as artificial coloring and flavoring. Seeds are high in fat and are not considered a healthy diet for your African Grey. Most African Greys on a pelleted diet do not need them.
Provide an assortment of fresh, wholesome, organic vegetables. As with a child, sometimes it can be a challenge to get them to eat their veggies so you might have to spend some time encouraging your Sulphur Crested to eat them. Some vegetables contain more nutrients needed for your bird than others.
Sulphur Crested Cockatoo Cage:
The cage is a safe retreat or haven for your Sulphur Crested cockatoo. This is where the bird feels safe and secure, no different than what you feel when you walk into the door of your home. There is food to eat, water to drink and best of all toys to play with!
Sulphur crested cockatoos are large cockatoos, which means they need large cages. Minimum requirements for an indoor cage are 70x70cm and a height of at least 100cm. The larger the cage you can provide your bird, the better. Height is important because they love to climb and enjoy getting that ‘bird’s eye view.’
The cage should be kept clean by wiping it down with detergent and water or a bird safe disinfectant solution. Newspaper seems to be the safest bedding as organic bedding can cause illness and death if ingested, also the dust associated with them can be harmful.
