Retired racing greyhounds make gentle, quiet, surprisingly lazy family pets. Greyhounds As Pets NSW assesses every dog, and we are among their many adoption day hosts.

Greyhounds are the most polite houseguests you'll ever have. They rarely bark, shed very little and have no doggy smell. Most are gentle, easily house-trained and happy alongside other pets.
For all that racing history, they're surprisingly low-energy - two short walks and a very long nap and they're sorted. Because every dog is assessed before adoption, what you meet is what you get: their personality is already shaped, so you know exactly who is coming home with you.

Our most recent Greyhounds As Pets day at Beaumont Hills saw 13 retired racers head home with their new families - some meeting their person within minutes of walking through the door.

Greyhounds As Pets (GAP) NSW is the rehoming program for retired racing greyhounds. Their team assesses, vets and prepares every dog, then matches them with the right household - and supports that household for life.
Kellyville Pets hosts GAP adoption days in store, gives every adopter advice and gear to get started, and keeps supporting them long after they head home. Adoption applications, eligibility and available dogs are all handled by GAP NSW.

Are greyhounds good with cats and small dogs?
Many are. GAP NSW assesses each dog around cats and small dogs and will tell you honestly what that dog is suited to. If you already have a cat or a small dog, say so in your application and they'll match accordingly.

Do greyhounds have to wear a muzzle in NSW?
Greyhounds that have passed the Greenhounds assessment are muzzle-exempt in public in NSW and wear a green collar instead. GAP-adopted dogs are assessed as part of the program.

How much exercise do they need?
Far less than people expect. Two short walks a day suits most greyhounds - they're sprinters, not endurance dogs, and spend the rest of the day asleep. They should always be on lead in unfenced areas.

Can they live indoors or in an apartment?
Yes - indoors is exactly where they want to be. They're quiet, clean and low-energy, which makes them one of the better large breeds for apartment living. Some need a little practice with stairs and slippery floors at first.

What does it cost, and what's included?
Adoption fees are set by GAP NSW and are modest compared with the vet work involved. Every dog comes desexed, vaccinated, wormed, microchipped, temperament assessed and with starter gear.

What if it doesn't work out?
GAP NSW supports adopters for the life of the dog, including taking a dog back if the placement isn't right. You're never on your own - and our team is here seven days a week too.

Applications are handled entirely by Greyhounds As Pets NSW at gapnsw.com.au/adopt. You can apply at any time - you don't need to wait for an adoption day.
