American Staffy Temperament

American Staffy’s have a great temperament and are known to be extremely brave, playful and affectionate as well as intensely loyal to their family. They are a highly intelligent breed that tends to be easy to obedience train, however as they can have a stubborn streak you must be firm and consistent with their training. Socialisation with other dogs and people is essential for Staffy puppies, otherwise their protective nature can be misread as an aggressive stance.

They make wonderful family dogs as they are excellent with children and, as long as socialised properly, tend to get along well with other dogs. Due to their high intelligence and playful nature it is essential that they be provided with plenty of strong and durable toys, as without proper stimulation they may get bored and become destructive.

American Staffy Health Issues

Hip Dysplasia: A common disease, particularly in large and giant dog breeds, where a malformation in the hip joint results in the joint rubbing and grinding. This can lead to irritation, pain and impaired walking ability.

Dry/Itchy Skin: Some dogs, especially those with a shorter coat, can be prone to dry, flaky and itchy skin. This can be helped by using an oatmeal based shampoo and conditioner. If this continues to occur it could be related to a food allergy or parasite, and should be seen by a vet.

Bloat: When a dogs stomach fills with food, fluid or gas, making it expand and put pressure against other organs, as well as compromising blood flow. With American Staffy's this will generally occur if they have eaten something they shouldn't have, and it causes a blockage in their digestive system.
