Natural History & Origin

The East African Rift Lakes — Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria — are the epicentre of the most spectacular evolutionary radiation of vertebrates ever documented. Lake Malawi alone contains over 1,000 described cichlid species, all believed to have evolved from a small number of ancestral colonists over the past one to two million years. These lakes are ancient, deep and chemically extremely stable: hard, alkaline water (pH 7.5-9.0; hardness 10-25 dGH) that has remained consistent for geological timescales. This chemical stability has shaped cichlids that are well-adapted to these precise conditions and poorly tolerant of departures from them in captivity.

Mbuna (meaning 'rock-dwellers' in the Tonga language of Malawi) are the highly territorial, algae-scraping herbivores found in the rocky shallows of Lake Malawi; lifespan 8-12 years in captivity and size 8-15cm. Peacock Cichlids (Aulonocara) are mid-water carnivore-omnivores that hunt invertebrates in sandy areas; lifespan 8-12 years and size 12-18cm. Frontosa are large, deep-water predators from Lake Tanganyika with a distinctive large cranial hump and bold barring; lifespan 15-25 years and size 25-35cm. Electric Yellow Cichlids; lifespan 6-10 years and size 8-10cm.

African Rift Lake cichlids are mouthbrooders: females incubate fertilised eggs in their mouths for several weeks until the fry are free-swimming, providing exceptional parental protection. This breeding strategy is one of the most fascinating behaviours observable in freshwater fishkeeping.

Tips for First-Time Owners

  1. 1 Maintain hard, alkaline water (pH 7.8-8.5; hardness 10-20 dGH) consistently: this is the single most critical requirement for African cichlid health. Use crushed coral, limestone rocks or buffer products to achieve and maintain the correct chemistry if your tap water is soft or neutral.
  2. 2 Never feed bloodworms or high-protein animal foods to Mbuna: this causes Malawi Bloat, which is frequently fatal. Feed Mbuna a plant-based spirulina diet.
  3. 3 For Mbuna, provide more caves than fish and break up all sightlines with rock structure: every individual must have potential refuge. Deliberate slight overcrowding spreads aggression effectively in a well-filtered tank.
  4. 4 Never mix cichlids from different lake systems: Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika species have different water chemistry requirements and are ecologically incompatible as tank mates.
  5. 5 Allow four to six weeks for the nitrogen cycle to complete fully before adding fish, and quarantine all new fish for two to four weeks before introduction to the display tank.
Setting up the habitat

Enclosure & Husbandry

African Rift Lake cichlids require hard, alkaline water maintained at pH 7.8-8.5 and general hardness 10-20 dGH. This is the single most critical and most frequently neglected requirement. In areas with soft or neutral tap water, crushed coral substrate, limestone rocks, or commercially available lake salt and buffer products are used to achieve and maintain the correct chemistry. Test and maintain parameters consistently: sudden changes cause stress and immune suppression even if the absolute values are corrected.

Minimum tank sizes: for a Mbuna colony, 150 cm / 200 litres; this is an absolute minimum and larger tanks perform significantly better. Peacock Cichlid colonies require similarly sized tanks. Frontosa require very large tanks — a minimum of 200-250 litres for a small group, and 400+ litres for a proper breeding colony. Frontosa naturally occupy deeper water and prefer tanks with more vertical depth than typical Mbuna setups.

Rock structure is essential for Mbuna: multiple stacked rocks forming interconnected caves and crevices, with broken line-of-sight throughout the tank. Every individual must have potential refuge. This structure also mimics the natural rocky shallows of Lake Malawi and produces the most visually authentic display. Peacock Cichlids prefer open sandy substrate areas with rocks at the periphery. Frontosa prefer lower light and substantial cave structures. Aquarium plants are largely incompatible with Mbuna, which will eat or uproot them; hardy plants attached to rocks (java fern, anubias) can work in Peacock tanks.

Filtration must be robust: cichlids are messy fish and the tank must be heavily filtered. A canister filter or sump rated for twice the tank volume is recommended. Temperature: 24-27°C for most Lake Malawi species; 24-26°C for Lake Tanganyika species including Frontosa.

What to feed

Dietary Management

Dietary requirements differ critically between African cichlid groups and mistakes cause serious disease.

Mbuna are herbivores/aufwuchs feeders (aufwuchs is the complex algae and micro-organism layer scraped from rocks). They must be fed a plant-based diet with high spirulina content: quality spirulina flake, spirulina pellets and herbivore cichlid pellets. High-protein animal foods — particularly bloodworms and beef heart — must not be fed to Mbuna as they cause Malawi Bloat, a serious and often fatal digestive condition.

Peacock Cichlids and larger Haplochromines are carnivore-omnivores requiring protein-rich foods: quality cichlid pellets, frozen krill, frozen mysis shrimp, and frozen brine shrimp. Frontosa are piscivores in the wild and require substantial protein: large carnivore pellets or sticks, frozen silversides, prawns and similar.

Feed adults once to twice daily; offer only what is consumed in two to three minutes and remove uneaten food promptly. Overfeeding is a primary driver of poor water quality. Fresh, dechlorinated water must be used in all water changes.

Day-to-day interaction

Handling & Socialisation

African cichlids are display fish appreciated through the aquarium glass. They are not handling animals. However, well-settled cichlids — particularly Peacocks and Frontosa — often recognise their keeper and approach the front of the glass at feeding time with confidence. Frontosa in particular can become remarkably bold and responsive to their keeper over time.

If handling is unavoidable for tank maintenance or disease treatment, use a large, soft fine-mesh net and minimise time out of water. Never drop fish from height into water.

Dominant males display their most intense colouration when establishing and defending territory, producing a constantly shifting visual spectacle. Mbuna engage in regular chasing and displaying; this is normal provided no fish is being persistently persecuted. Peacock Cichlids are generally somewhat less aggressive than Mbuna and can coexist in a colony with careful stocking. Frontosa are calmer but will eat any fish small enough to fit in their large mouths.

African cichlids are mouthbrooding fish: after spawning, the female carries the eggs and then the free-swimming fry in her mouth for several weeks, fasting during this entire period. Observing this behaviour is one of the most rewarding experiences in African cichlid keeping.

This extraordinary diversity is believed to have evolved from a single ancestral cichlid lineage within the past one to two million years, making it the fastest large-scale vertebrate species radiation ever documented.

African cichlids are mouthbrooders: females carry fertilised eggs and developing fry inside their mouths for three to six weeks, fasting throughout the entire brooding period. Fry will dash back into the mother's mouth at any sign of danger for several weeks after becoming free-swimming.

Male Mbuna produce and display egg spots — orange or yellow markings on the anal fin that mimic eggs — during courtship. As the female picks up these 'dummy eggs' during spawning she inadvertently takes in sperm released by the male, fertilising the real eggs already in her mouth: a uniquely sophisticated reproductive deception.

Enrichment

Environmental complexity is the primary form of enrichment for African cichlids. For Mbuna, a densely structured rocky habitat with interconnected caves, multiple levels of rock and broken sightlines is both essential for welfare and creates a visually stunning aquascape. Rearranging the rock structure periodically during maintenance resets territorial boundaries and prevents any individual from establishing a monopoly on the best areas.

For Peacock Cichlids, open sandy areas that allow their natural sand-sifting foraging behaviour provide enrichment. Crushed coral or fine sand substrate that males can sift through during territory establishment reflects natural behaviour. For Frontosa, a dimly lit, cave-heavy environment with subdued lighting best replicates their natural deep-water habitat.

A varied diet — rotating between pellets and frozen foods — provides feeding enrichment. Offering slightly different foods on different days maintains interest and provides better overall nutrition.

What to watch for

Common Health Issues

Malawi Bloat: A serious, often fatal digestive condition affecting primarily herbivorous Mbuna caused by feeding high-protein animal-based foods (especially bloodworms and beef heart) or from bacterial infection secondary to dietary stress. Symptoms: severe abdominal swelling, pineconing scales, rapid breathing, lethargy and loss of appetite. Prevention: feed Mbuna an exclusively plant-based, spirulina-rich diet and never offer bloodworms.

Hole-in-the-head disease (Hexamita): Parasitic intestinal flagellates causing pitting and erosion of the head and lateral line tissue; worsened by poor water quality, vitamin deficiency and stress. Treat under veterinary guidance with appropriate antiprotozoal medication.

Ich (white spot): Caused by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis; very common after new fish introduction. Treat with aquarium-safe white spot medication and raise temperature slightly to 28-29 deg C to accelerate the parasite's lifecycle. Quarantine new fish to prevent introduction.

Fin rot and bacterial infections: Secondary to injury or poor water quality; treat with aquarium-safe antibacterial medication and improve water quality.

Aggression injuries: Persistent bullying causes fin damage and stress-related immune suppression. Ensure adequate stocking density in Mbuna tanks, sufficient rock structure, and remove severely bullied individuals promptly.

Commonly Asked Questions

  • Can I mix cichlids from different African lakes?

    Not recommended. Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika species have different water chemistry preferences, different aggression levels and different dietary needs. Mixing lake systems produces a tank that is suboptimal for all inhabitants.

  • Why are my Mbuna always fighting?

    Some level of chasing and aggression is completely normal in a Mbuna tank and does not always indicate a problem. Ensure the tank has more caves than fish, dense rock structure with broken sightlines, and adequate stocking. Remove any fish that is being persistently cornered or has stopped feeding.

  • What pH and hardness do African cichlids need?

    Lake Malawi species: pH 7.8-8.5, hardness 10-20 dGH. Lake Tanganyika species (including Frontosa): pH 7.8-9.0, hardness 12-25 dGH.

  • Can African cichlids live with plants?
