Where they come from

Natural History & Origin

The dwarf gourami is native to the slow-moving freshwater habitats of South Asia — primarily the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Barak river systems of India, and neighbouring Bangladesh and Pakistan. In the wild it inhabits densely vegetated shallow waters: rice paddies, irrigation channels, drainage ditches and slow-moving stream margins. These environments are often heavily shaded, have negligible water movement, and can have low dissolved oxygen — the labyrinth organ is an evolutionary response to these conditions.

The Dwarf Gourami was first described by Francis Hamilton in 1822 and has been kept in Western aquaria since the late 19th century. No licence is required in Australia. Captive fish must never be released into Australian waterways.

An important note for Australian buyers: a significant proportion of Dwarf Gouramis in retail trade are sourced from mass-breeding operations where Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus (DGIV) has become endemic. Studies estimate infection rates of 15–22% in commercial stock. Sourcing from reputable specialist retailers, quarantining all new fish, and observing carefully before purchase are the most important risk-reduction steps.

Tips for First-Time Owners

  1. 1 Quarantine every new fish for two to four weeks before adding it to the main tank — this is the most important DGIV prevention step. A simple quarantine tank (20–40 litres, sponge filter, heater) protects an entire established aquarium.
  2. 2 Watch the male's colour daily — a previously vivid male turning dull or grey is communicating a problem. Test water quality first; assess feeding and stress factors second.
  3. 3 Only one male per tank under 100 litres — male territorial conflict is one of the most common causes of stress and injury in this species.
  4. 4 Floating plants are functional, not decorative — surface cover reduces light stress, provides bubble nest anchoring and produces visibly more active, confident fish.

Setting up the habitat

Enclosure & Husbandry

A minimum of 60 litres (approximately 60 cm long) is appropriate for a single male and one or two females, or a small peaceful community. Larger tanks (80–100 litres) better manage male territoriality. Never house two or more males together in a small tank — they will fight continuously.

Setup should replicate densely vegetated shallow-water habitat. Floating plants (water sprite, frogbit, dwarf water lettuce) are particularly important: they provide the diffused light and surface cover the species strongly prefers, and anchor points for bubble nest construction. Dense mid-water planting with stem plants and java fern provides territories and hiding.

Filtration must be gentle — strong water movement stresses this species. A sponge filter or low-flow internal filter is ideal. Avoid heavy surface agitation (disrupts bubble nests). Critically, the water surface must be accessible at all times: the labyrinth organ requires regular access to atmospheric air, and a sealed surface gap can cause breathing difficulty and death.

Temperature: 24–28°C. pH: 6.0–7.5. Hardness: 4–15 dGH. Dechlorinated water only. Dark substrate enhances colour display. Subdued lighting via floating plant cover is strongly preferred.

Dietary Management

Dwarf Gouramis are omnivores in the wild, consuming insects, zooplankton, algae and plant matter at and near the surface. In captivity they accept a wide range of foods readily. A quality small-particle tropical pellet or micro-pellet fed as the staple provides balanced nutrition; supplement with high-quality small flake. Frozen or live foods — daphnia, bloodworm, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae — improve colour intensity, immune function and breeding condition.

Feed small amounts twice daily — only what is consumed in two to three minutes. Uneaten food degrades water quality rapidly. Dwarf Gouramis are surface and mid-water feeders; surface-floating foods are ideal. Colour-enhancing live or frozen foods are the most reliable way to maintain vivid male colouration — a fading male often signals dietary deficiency or water quality decline.

Handling & Socialisation

Fish are not handled — all management is environmental. Minimise netting and transfers, which are stressful. Use a soft net and work gently when netting is necessary. The Dwarf Gourami coexists well with similarly sized, non-aggressive fish: small tetras, rasboras, corydoras catfish, small livebearers and other peaceful mid-water species. Avoid fin-nippers (tiger barbs, serpae tetras), large aggressive fish and anything fast enough to outcompete for food.

Keep only one male per tank unless the tank is large (100 litres+) with well-separated territories and dense planting. Males are generally peaceful toward females and other species. The species can be shy in sparse setups — a densely planted tank with floating cover produces noticeably more confident and visible fish.

Male Dwarf Gouramis build elaborate bubble nests — rising to the surface to gulp air, blowing each bubble individually and coating it with saliva to increase durability, then arranging the mass beneath floating plants. Environmental enrichment is built into the setup. A densely planted tank with floating cover, varied planting depths, driftwood and smooth rocks creates territories and exploration opportunities that naturally express foraging and resting behaviours.

Breeding behaviour is one of the most rewarding observations in this species — the male builds an elaborate bubble nest beneath floating plants, displays intensely, and guards eggs and fry with dedicated attention. Providing floating plants specifically enables this remarkable behaviour even without breeding intent.

Varied feeding — rotating pellet, flake, frozen and live foods — provides foraging variety and mimics natural behaviour across the water column and surface.

Common Health Issues

Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus (DGIV): The most significant health concern. DGIV is a highly contagious, incurable viral disease caused by a megalocytivirus in the family Iridoviridae. Endemic in many commercial breeding operations; infection rates of 15–22% have been estimated in commercial stock. Infected fish show progressive lethargy, colour fading, loss of appetite, abdominal swelling and skin lesions; death typically occurs within days to weeks. No treatment exists. Prevention only: source from reputable retailers, quarantine all new fish for two to four weeks, never share equipment between tanks.

Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis): White spots on body and fins. Treatable with aquarium salt or copper-based treatments; raising temperature to 28–30°C accelerates the parasite's lifecycle.

Velvet (Oodinium): Fine golden-yellow dust on body; treat promptly with copper medication in a hospital tank.

Bacterial infections (fin rot, open sores): Usually caused by water quality decline or aggression injury. Improve water quality; treat with aquarium salt and antibiotic as appropriate.
